There are many of vegan bodybuilders and athletes. It is not difficult to put on more muscle with a vegan diet. You don't need animal flesh. Lean meats (which are about 20-23% fat) are NOT the best sources of protein. We have all been brainwashed by the Beef and Dairy Councils. Exit the matrix and free your mind!

I agree with you. I started following a paleo/primal lifestyle (not just the diet) and feel so much better. Yes, I admit, giving up some of my favorite "junk foods" and rice/pasta/potatoes daily was difficult but now that I don't have blood sugar spikes/drops, bloating, headaches and a bunch of other issues I don't crave those things all the time. Yes I occasionally have some rice or pasta once or twice a week as a treat but I do so with portion control. I do not feel deprived.

But I think with any "diet", whether you eat meat or not, everyone needs to cut out the junk and processed foods and eat as many fresh whole foods as possible... veggies, fruit, nuts/seeds, lean meats. Sure you can have some candy or chips once in awhile but not everyday. There has to be a happy middle.

Junk food veganism is without a doubt unhealthy but that does not mean that all veganism is. Just like I have seen junk food paleo done as well.

I think you have to do what is best for you and what is best for one is not best for another.

I am suspicious anytime someone tells me there is only one way to do something.

Vegan definitely does not =healthy. Ramen noodles are vegan... There is a theory that the reason humans evolved higher intelligence is that they began to eat fish and the extra fatty acids boosted brain power. If that is true, I can't imagine a diet that did not provide a good source of DHA omega 3's could possibly be good for brain function.

For those of you who are vegans, will you please post a couple days of your meal plan? I've been vegetarian for many years, vegan for one, but have started to incorporate fish into my diet. Minus the few treats every now and then, my eating is pretty clean.

How are you guys consuming enough protein without getting sick of the food? I've choked down as many nuts, cottage cheese, tuna, tofu, protein powders, soy proteins, quinoa, etc., that I still can't hit 1g of protein per lb.

Thanks in advance. :)

I agree with a lot of what you said - the quality of a person's diet is more important than the inclusion of certain food groups (i.e. a vegan who eats mostly vegetables and unrefined foods vs. a vegan who eats white pasta, pizza, etc.). However, I'm going to also respectfully disagree that a vegan diet in general will make a person softer and weaker. Again, there's more to the story - is that person eating enough to compensate for the lower calorie intake that naturally comes with excluding animals from their diet? Is that person replacing plant protein with other protein sources or are they simply eating more carbohydrates? There aren't enough (if any) studies that give us insight to whether a plant based diet done the "right" way will help or hinder muscle growth. And the people that do it the "right" way represent the minority, such as the vegan athletes you mentioned. Is it easier to eat paleo in this modern world? Yes. But that's not to say a vegan diet can't give you 'the building blocks to support and sustain life and grow muscle tissue'. I've been vegan for 3+ years now and I've gained muscle (more so now that I strength train regularly) since adopting that diet.

P.S. I'm a fan of your site and you've given me a new appreciation for burpees haha
