I’ve been thinking lately about how so many people struggle with food. It’s really quite amazing when you think about it! Many of us have no issues working out for hours on end nearly every day of the week, but when it comes to food many people can’t regulate what and how much they eat. And often that’s because people equate healthy food with bad tasting food.
So for today’s Angry Issue I’m asking a very simple question… what’s the best and worst tasting fitness food out there?
The reason I ask is simple – I think more people would adhere to better nutrition plans if we had good tasting, healthy food that contributed to better health and fitness. And you know what? We do! To be honest my question is really a jab at all of those people who think ‘healthy food’ is steamed veggies and chicken. Now of course that can be a good meal, but it’s bland, boring and really how much chicken can you eat? It doesn’t have to be that way.
You all know that I like to tell it as it really is right? The TRUTH is that anything can be made using healthy cooking methods and ingredients. Sure a burger from a fast food joint tastes great, but you can make an even better tasting one in your house with more nutritious ingredients that won’t blow up your diet. I’ve been posting some of my meals on Facebook and Twitter and I have to tell you that the response has been unanimous – everyone says how amazing the food looks. Not only does it look good, it tastes great! I eat fish, chicken, lean meats with vegetables and exotic spices and I’ll tell you I crave nothing. Well maybe a little ice cream!
Unfortunately when you go to most restaurants their idea of healthy food is a scoop of cottage cheese, a burger without the bun or a plain salad with dried up turkey on top. I watch a lot of the Food Network shows and it always makes me laugh when the chefs are praised for how great their food tastes. Of course it tastes great! It’s drowned and fried in butter, topped with sugar and mixed with creams, oils and lard! That doesn’t impress me at all. You can bread and fry cardboard then top it with powdered sugar and it’ll taste good. What does impress me is when I eat food that’s healthy and it DOESN’T have all that junk added in to it – that’s a skill and understanding of spices and various food flavors. All of the food that I eat I’d order at a restaurant if it were available. That’s the truth.
So what’s the best tasting healthy food? Anything! What’s the worst tasting healthy food? Same – anything. No food is inherently bad for you, it’s how we prepare it that either keeps its nutrients intact and enhances flavor or washes it out with saturated fat, extra calories and denatures it.
Now that said if I had to choose, my absolute favorite dish that’s healthy and packs a fitness punch as of late has been fish, lightly battered with egg whites and almond meal, sautéed with green beans, onions and other vegetables (no potato). I eat Salmon, Basa, Shark, White Fish and really all varieties. In fact it’s fish that has mostly taken over my diet.
On the flipside – while it’s clearly not the worst, I’m soooo over boiled or grilled chicken with salad. Don’t get me wrong I’ll still eat salad, but I have to admit the thought of chewing down another chicken filler doesn’t fill me with joy!
Okay that’s my choice – what’s yours. What healthy food do you love – and what do you loathe! Share away…
