Fitness Fact Or Fiction: Is Calf Size REALLY All Genetics?
Jul 31st
So here we have a topic that is near and dear to me – calf size, or lack of I should say! With my return to amateur bodybuilding just weeks away, I’ve been doing all I can to ‘bring up’ my calves. But is this hopeless?
Is calf size really all genetics?
In short I believe the answer to be an absolute YES! But here’s the thing – all of your muscles shapes, sizes and lengths and due to your genetics. The issue with calves and why they’re so noticeable is that they’re kind of hanging out all by themselves for everyone to More >
Ask Alfonso: How Do I Plan My Own Workouts?
Jul 30th
Hi Alfonso,
I am trying to switch from performing all the classes at my gym to different workouts of my own. The classes are usually full body and I normally do some kind of workout everyday, but I am having a difficult time trying to plan what my own training workouts will be everyday.
I feel working each body part once a week isn’t enough because I am used to doing the classes everyday (working all body parts) and I’ve stopped seeing results.
Any advice Alfonso?

21 DAYS To Showtime: I Feel Great!
Jul 29th
Yep, that’s right. I’m counting the days, not weeks now, till I return to the bodybuilding stage again. This is the part of the contest prep that really starts to become a challenge – both physically and mentally. I know I’ve said it before, but I really can’t believe I’m doing this again after all these years…!
Today I thought I’d talk a bit about how my preparation is affecting me emotionally. I’ve said here before on the site that in the past I’ve developed an unhealthy relationship with food while preparing for previous shows. And let me tell you, it’s More >
ATF Classic: Why Biggest Isn’t Best
Jul 27th
Today I’m sharing the very first post I ever wrote for Angry Trainer Fitness as part of our ATF Classic strand…
Anyone who’s followed me for some time knows that I have many issues with the Biggest Loser TV show, and I’ve never held back from expressing them. In truth my view has changed a little since I first wrote this post and my attitude towards Jillian has definitely softened considerably! I now recognize she had a part to play in a show and I can’t argue with her success. In fact I quite like the work she’s doing now that More >
Infomercial Insanity: The Push Up Pump
Jul 26th
I’ve been watching a fair amount of TV lately. As you may know I’m getting ready to hit the amateur bodybuilding stage once again in just over 3 weeks and while performing one of my many cardio sessions, I caught the infomercial for a new fitness gadget called the Push Up Pump on the airwaves.
What is it? What does it do? And does it work?
Here’s my Angry Trainer summary…

Ask Alfonso: When Should I Eat Before A Workout?
Jul 25th
Dear Alfonso,
When is the best time to eat prior to weight lifting vs. cardio? I am on round 2 of P90X and incorporating a walk-to-run program as part of my workout. I generally wait an hour after eating before a weight lifting routine. I wish I could just hop out of bed and get my workout over for the day but I don’t perform very well without food. Also, do I have to eat prior to a cardio workout?
I don’t love working out, honestly. I am a stay-at-home mom so I make time because I want to lose weight and More >
Angry Issues: What’s The Best And Worst Tasting Fitness Food?
Jul 24th
I’ve been thinking lately about how so many people struggle with food. It’s really quite amazing when you think about it! Many of us have no issues working out for hours on end nearly every day of the week, but when it comes to food many people can’t regulate what and how much they eat. And often that’s because people equate healthy food with bad tasting food.
So for today’s Angry Issue I’m asking a very simple question… what’s the best and worst tasting fitness food out there?
The reason I ask is simple – I think more people would adhere to More >
Milk – Should It Be Taken Off The School Menu?
Jul 23rd
Once again good old milk is at the center of another health controversy!
Late last week I read in Time Magazine that a group of doctors have petitioned the US Government to remove milk from the ‘required foods list’ on the National School Lunch Program. This certainly isn’t the first time milk has been under a microscope. Perform a quick Google search and you’ll find thousands of articles opposing human consumption of the American standby, citing that it causes allergies, inflammation, gastric distress and a whole host of health issues.
Interestingly one my first postings here at Angry Trainer Fitness concerned milk and proved More >
