The June Angry Trainer Challenge Begins!
Ready for a challenge everyone!
As you may recall, about a week ago I issued my Weight-Less challenge. Essentially I asked all of you to put the dumbbells and barbells down for the month of June and join me in using resistance bands, bodyweight and suspension system exercises for all your workouts instead. I think most of you think I’m nuts for training this way – but trust me – it really works!
I can tell you that I’m now in my 3rd week of training and my workouts have been awesome! I feel great and as I’ve said before, if you think bands are wimpy – think again! I’ve had some of my best workouts when NOT lifting ‘real’ weights. So starting today I’ll be posting my workouts on Facebook and asking you to follow along or post your own. This is only for the month of June – come on you can do it!
I’ve also made a big decision – I’m going to compete again in bodybuilding. As I write these words I still find it hard to believe that once again on August 18th, I’m going to stand on stage, overly (fake) tanned, oiled up and flex my stuff. But I think it’ll give me a great goal to shoot for and keep me focused and on track with my training and diet. Right now I weigh about 208 pounds and have decided to compete as a middleweight, which means I need to get down to 190 pounds! I’ll also be posting my progress and diet on Facebook as well. This is sure to be an experience.
Now keep in mind that I have just 11 weeks to stage day and the first 4 of them I’ll be doing my weight-less challenge. So obviously I believe in the merits of other forms of training. Which brings me to my next big point – can I compete in bodybuilding without training like a bodybuilder? I’ve often said that I may have looked great in previous years but I wasn’t very functionally fit. And I think this is true of many bodybuilders. I don’t plan on sacrificing any of my fitness to do this show and will keep training as I have been for years – emphasizing health and fitness over just the look. When I do step on stage I plan on looking ripped and shredded at 190 pounds, but also be in the best shape and conditioning of my life. It will be a terrific journey to document. And I’m involving all of you! By sharing my commitment to get in contest shape I’ve made myself accountable to all of you. So feel free to check in on me, ask how I’m doing and even make sure I’m not slacking!
So comment below and let me know if you’ll accept my weight-less challenge. Come on, four weeks is nothing!

I thought I’d happily go weightless… until I realized that means no kettlebells. No kettlebells?!?! (brief moment of silent sadness) Ok. I’ll set them aside in support of the cause.
I am fascinated to see the results of this experiment, though. Is it possible to compete as a bodybuilder without tearing your body up with monster weights? Yeah. I think it probably is. I think you are going to rock it. Especially since the “shredding” is going to come mostly from diet anyway.
Quick aside—I don’t know if you can add anymore to your web-publishing plate, but there’s a lot of us who are on Google+ instead of Facebook. Do you have any plans of adding content there? I think it would be great if you did.
Good luck!

Dre I’m with you! I love my kettlebells. But for four weeks I can live. And here’s a hint – July’s challenge will involve them! So stay tuned!….

I do agree with dre as far a the kettlebells go, I’ll miss them..but I’m up for the challenge for this month. I’m excited to see how training this way get results

I’m in, well sort of. I can only do 6 days a week with no weights because I just signed up for a once a week kettlebell class. Does that still count?

Man I’m exicted for you. You remind me of Apollo Creed in Rocky IV.
“You can’t change what you are. We’re born with a killer instinct that you can’t turn on and off like some radio. We have to be right in the middle of the action ’cause we’re warriors. And without some challenge, without some damn war to fight, then the warrior might as well be dead.”
