Infomercial Insanity: Neckline Slimmer
I’ve been writing these Infomercial Insanity posts for months now and by now you’ve probably realized just how downright deceptive some companies can be. But it’s one thing for a product to not deliver on its promises, and another when it can lead to potential injuries or health problems.
Today I’m reviewing the Neckline Slimmer, a product that claims to get rid of double chins and tone your saggy neck. But personally I’m not so sure…
Here’s my Angry Trainer Fitness take…
Product Pitch
World-renowned physiotherapist Paul Younane invented this ‘groundbreaking’ neck toner and explains in the promotional video that his brainchild uses progressive resistance to gently firm neck muscles and lift skin at the same time for a dramatic look.
On the company website, the makers state that by using the Neckline Slimmer for just 2 minutes a day, women can slim and re-contour their neckline. Use of the Slimmer “redefines jawlines, firms chins, alters profiles, and virtually reverses the effects of aging” and it’s all achieved without plastic surgery, using “The World’s First Neck Toning System”.
The voiceover during the video goes on to announce that using the slimmer “does for your neck, what exercise does for your body”. The Slimmer costs about $20, and comes with 3 level of resistance, and a neck training DVD. But does it work?
Angry Trainer Says:
Okay, first let’s talk some basic anatomy. Double or turkey chins have NOTHING to do with toning your neck muscles. I have family members who have had corrective surgery for this condition and accompanied them to the surgeon.
Sagging or loose chins happens mainly for one of two reasons, neither having to do with the tone of your neck muscles. The reasons are 1) the actual skin under the chin becomes loose and detaches from the underlying muscle; leaving it hanging. A simple procedure fixes this. 2) You get fat! Yes, eating too much can cause an accumulation of fat under the chin, just like anywhere else!
As with all of the abdominal machines and devices on the market, no amount of strengthening or toning of muscles will change or affect the skin covering it, and the same holds true here. In my opinion, you can’t shape a jawline or define a chin, because it’s simply a resistance device for underlying muscles. So in my opinion, this toner will do nothing, except potentially give you neck pain. The fact that a physiotherapist invented this is a joke to me! He must know that many people suffer from a forward head position. This happens from daily life, sitting, driving etc. – the front muscles of the neck become shortened, while the back stretch or lengthen. This isn’t just my opinion, it’s an anatomical fact.
I think that using the Neckline Slimmer will only make this condition worse, much worse, as you’ll now be strengthening and shortening those front neck muscles. This may put even more strain on the back of your neck and possibly lead to some serious cervical issues. Seriously, this is a product that truly worries me.
The Angry Trainer says: Absolutely Insane – The Neckline Slimmer Is More Likely To Give You A Pain In Your Wallet, Than Tone Your Neck!

I have just seen this thing advertised on a UK shopping channel and concur with you 100 %. knowing a little about anatomy and Alexander technique I found the idea of this device positively frightening. It is simply another way of conning money out of people by convincing them there’s yet another part of their body which isn’t perfect. They buy the device, use it, feel pain and swear blind its working. Yeah, course it is. On your HEAD! People who have nothing wrong with their appearance who use this thing are probably in danger of causing themselves future spinal problems. Anybody with genuine issues, save your money and seek medical advice. This thing certainly won’t work.

Question for Mr Angry Trainer…. I found your review very interesting and it made a lot of sense. You give the explanation as follows… “the actual skin under the chin becomes loose and detaches from the underlying muscle; leaving it hanging. A simple procedure fixes this” can you tell us what the ‘simple procedure’ is??? Many thanks.

I’m also wondering…Mr Angry Trainer never responded to your question just what the ‘simple procedure” to loose and hanging skin.

I apologize Linda and Sandy. Google Platysmaplasty. That’s the most common procedure to correct this.

Some years ago, when I was still “not informed” I actually tried this out. Therefore, I can say that I completely agree with you, Alfonso. Not only did it make my whole neck and jaw area feel tense, but I also started grinding my teeth and developed a constant ear ache. Thankfully I quickly realized what it came from and stopped using it. Soon after the symptoms disappeared. Definitely a waste of money and a health risk!
