Testing The Trainers: The Brazil Butt Lift Program
Here we go again with another Testing The Trainers, where I break down a popular exercise program and give you my take. In my opinion does the workout work, or is it worthless?
Beach Body, the company that brought us P90X, Insanity, and Turbo Jam is at it again. This program’s called the Brazil Butt Lift – but is it for you?
Program Shakedown
As the name implies, this series of DVD workouts is designed to shape up your backside. Whether you have a flat, fat, wide, or skinny rear, Leandro Carvalho, trainer to the supermodels, and his Brazil Butt program, will “reshape your booty, to a thing of beauty”. Using the exercises will supposedly lift, shape, and reduce your backside through “triangle training”, a system of exercise positions that work the glutes from different angles.
Leandro says his greatest challenge was learning to train the butt muscles without overworking the legs, so many of the program’s exercises are designed to isolate the glutes with specific, targeted movements. The regime is pitched as a one of a kind, booty sculpting sensation that works for everyone, and consists of 3 DVD’s; each with their own focus, a meal plan, a body makeover guide, workout cards, and a pencil. You can achieve a shapely butt for $55 – $72 at various online stores.
Conclusion
Well I’m all for shapely, nicely toned rear ends, but anytime I hear a trainer tell someone that using their program will reduce the size of a specific area I cringe!
First of all, Brazil Butt Lift is very similar to Zumba, a very popular aerobic dance class. What Leandro has done is combine components of Brazilian dance, with traditional glute exercises, and add in a bit of Capoeira; a martial arts/dance exercise. It looks fun, but it’s not groundbreaking, and in my opinion, exercises like traditional squats, step-ups, and lunges are the most effective at targeting the glutes.
Truthfully, reshaping your butt and trying to change it into something it’s not is a recipe for failure. You can certainly improve any area of your body with appropriate training, but if you were born with a flat rear end, the likelihood of you attaining bubble butt status is slim.
What bothers me most is once again we have a program pitching the use of specific training, this time the fancy sounding “triangle training”, will reduce areas of your backside. Nonsense! Training a muscle in a specific area does not reduce its size, slim the area, or reduce the amount of body fat covering it. We see this with abs commercials all the time and it drives me nuts!
If you like to dance, but want a little more variety than a traditional Brazilian dance class, then this might be a good fit for you. But don’t expect to transform your body or star in a rap video any time soon!

Thanks for the review. I admit, I always get sucked into this commercial/infomercial whenever it’s on, as I’m a naturally flat-bottomed girl! I think if I can pick it up used, it’d be fun to change things up.

My girlfriend has brought up the fact that she has a flat and skinny bottom. I think she is cute there but more would be better for sure.
She does not have a weight problem at all so I worry that if she were to start something like this Brazilian Butt workout the results could be an even a smaller but. This would be a disaster.
What I get from this “Testing The Trainers” article is that although this program may not be as revolutionary as it purports, it DOES incorporate the tried and true exercises that are recommended for sculpting and strengthening the butt. So if it’s fun to do then it would be worth a try. And also this is the first article that seems to say that this program claims to be able to increase the size of a flat skinny bottom.
What I think I know is that sore muscles = muscle growth if you give them enough rest to heal between workouts. Say two to three workouts per week. The testimonials on this workout claim very sore butt muscle after relatively short workouts.
What I would like to know is::: Does my girl have a chance at getting even a little rounder if she works out correctly? Or should we decide to be happy as we are? This Brazilian Butt Lift workout looks like something my girls would have a lot of fun doing. Could this be the right program? This assumes that it is done in a way that targets her specific issue.

Did you even look at the entire program? IT IS NOT VERY VERY SIMILAR TO ZUMBA. They are two very different programs! I have both of them…they are NOT alike. Have you not SEEN the before and after pictures of people who have done this program? This program is not about ‘spot reducing’ at all. It it a total body program that focuses on the booty & leg area. Have you done the program yourself or worked with someone doing the program? You shouldn’t knock a program until you try it.

Really Jackie? Those before and after pictures, the name Brazilian Butt Lift-not misleading at all right? Give me a break! It’s not marketed and sold as anything other than what the infomercial implies. Let me ask YOU Jackie, why did you buy it? For a total body workout or to change your backside?

Um Jackie all those “after” photos on the website are so BLATANTLY touched up, it’s actually offensive. You can clearly tell the after shots are airbrushed, which is false advertising.

I decided to do this workout because as a woman I have a different body chemistry than a man that generally allows fat deposits to sit more heavily on my hips and thighs. You as a man, albeit a very fit one, do not normally have this problem because your hormones are balance differently. Hence, you don’t see many “pear-shaped” men walking around.
I bought this workout because I hate my thighs and I wanted something that really targeted my lower body…and hey if it tightens my booty great.
One thing I do have to say is Jackie is right..it’s not Zumba. It has some dance aspects to it in the Cardio Axe tape. There are samba dance steps and a bit of Capoeira. Some of these tapes even for very fit people are hard. I don’t know many people who have gotten through the Bum Bum workout without pausing the tape to rest. There are lots of lunges, lots of floor work, and a ton of cardio.
Last of all, if you’re going to review a workout the least you could do as a professional trainer is try the program in order to adequately gauge what it can do. I know that this series is targeted for women mainly, but that doesn’t mean it’s specifically for women. And that doesn’t mean that you as a man can’t at least try it. I think unless you try the actual workouts…all of them then you should be knowledgeable enough to make a review. However, I find your summary lacking, and I hope anybody that finds this page with at least do more digging instead of listening to you. No offense. Thanks

I have to disagree with you. I bought this program and I have to say, my backside is shaping up nicely. It also works your abs and arms. I give it a big thumbs up! I don’t know if if will shape up a flat butt or not but it is, at least, something different and although it’s not as intense as P90x, it still kicked my butt (pun intended). I like the healthy recipe ideas that come with it but just like all exercise dvd’s you will eventually get bored. Just my two cents!

It leaves you very sore just after the first workout but I guess that would happen to any unfit person trying out a new program. I’m into my third week and I’ve never gotten through the bum bum workout BUT I have noticed plenty changes in my body, especially my abs. They’ve gotten significantly flatter and I see plenty a good amount of definition. Mind you, I wasn’t chubby to begin with. I guess I could safely say that I LOVE this program ! My bum bum has always had the lift and shape but it was rather jiggly and I’ve started seeing a little change in that area ! I strongly recommend this to every woman out there who is a little self conscious about her body.

I have this workout series (got it for free) and I like it. My bf is a PT so he has already schooled me on all the garbage that’s out there (Tracy Anderson has got to be the biggest scam) and what one can and can’t do to their bodies. That being said, I found that the sessions were fun and quick, and left a good soreness the next day. I’m not using it to change my backside, but just as a general workout/strengthening program. I think Leandro himself is actually a bit annoying but I enjoy the quick pace and that I can work up a nice sweat in 25-30 minutes.

I definitely disagree with this whole article. Sorry Alfonso. It’s just that I have tried this workout, and as a woman, I have greatly felt and seen effects in my bum. It is more shapely and lifted. You can really feel your glutes hurting at every exercise so that only means that these exercises really targeting that area. It’s doing lunges, squats and step ups in a more lively and fun manner. And btw, zumba is totaaaalllyy different. Zumba is more of a cardio workout. This one though has that too but focuses mainly on the butt area. And whoever’s done this program definitely felt the burn.

I have to admit I am about 30 days into this program for flat butt and I’ve already seen an increased inch around my hips, more definition in my arms, back and abs including obliques. Im very satisfied with the results, my butt muscles are bigger and loosing the bit of love handle/back fat makes it look better too.
