VIDEO: Exercise Rights And Wrongs – Squats
Hey everyone!
Hope you’re all still enjoying Angry Trainer Fitness as we continue on our mission to tell the TRUTH about health and fitness…
Today the Angry Trainer Team is very excited as we’re about to start launching video content here on the site. Yes, we’ve been wanting to expand the site for a while now and a couple of weeks ago we shot some great little segments which we’ll be running over the next few weeks. There’s no stopping us now!
This video is for a new strand we’re running here on the site called Exercise Rights And Wrongs. The fact is that I see so many people at the gym – and on reality TV shows – using terrible form and putting themselves at terrible risk for injury. Plus they’re not even getting the full benefits of the exercise they’re performing!
To kick us off I’m addressing the form of one of the greatest exercises of all time – The Squat.
The Squat is called the “king of all exercises” because it works every muscle in your body, and when performed correctly, can increase an individual’s fitness level significantly. But as with most common exercises, many people get ahead of themselves and use too much weight, poor form, and run a very high risk of injury.
Check out the video below – pass it on to your friends and comment away – I listen to all of the feedback you provide.
Also head over to the Angry Trainer Fitness channel on You Tube – and become a subscriber and you’ll be notified about all my upcoming videos. .
Stay angry everyone!
Alfonso
PS Special thanks to Jay at CrossFit, Ridgefield for the location and our cameraman Craig Dacey

Very helpful. I’m gonna try it next friday as I’m injured right now.
I also do the mistake to put the bar (along the pads) on my neck because it feels like it’s about to fall down any second when I put it lower on my back.
By the way – you sound a little critical as you mentioned the padding. Not a good thing?

I just wanted to say what a great website this is. I love the information you provide and I have been taking notes
. I’m going to try your flamingo workout tomorrow!
Thank you for these instructions! I always had lower back pain after doing squats, and I was just telling my mother last night how I thought I was holding the bar wrong. And since I’m a bodyrocker I do a lot of squats. Now I know better, time to try it out!

I’m glad you like the site! Thank you and spread the word.

Interesting! I’ve never been shown how to squat, as the trainer at our gym isn’t interested in checking form, or even demonstrating moves. I definitely have the bar in the wrong position. Could be something that’s contributing to the back pain I get some days after workouts.

Thanks for all the good info, Alfonso! I just found your site and really enjoy it
I have read and learned just a little bit about squatting from Rippetoe, and one thing I noticed with this video is that Alejandra’s neck is quite extended. Rippetoe recommends that the gaze should be down in front of you (maybe 4 feet ahead on the floor) so the chin is tucked slightly closer to the body. What do you think about this?

Hey Lisa, thanks for the comment. In a true anatomically correct squat, the head should be neutral. But most people suffer from a forward head position, due to sitting and everyday life. Usually, they’ll have a tight SCM (front neck) and the tendency will be to look down when they begin to struggle with form Whenever I can, I recommend for people to extend their cervical spine a bit to compensate and train the muscles in the back of the neck. And incidentally, I personally find it easier to focus on form and powering up from the bottom when I look up a bit, as opposed to straight forward.

Just wanted to say thanks for posting this on squats. I finally viewed this after coming home from the gym once again with a very sore neck. Tried the “new” technique and it was amazing how much better they were! Not ANY neck pain at all. AWESOMENESS!
