I’m a 50-year-old mom of two and work out regularly.
I like to think I’m in pretty good shape but I have one problem area that drives me crazy – the underside of my arms. They’re just really loose and saggy and I hate them!
I know it’s hard to target specific parts of the body but do you have any advice on how I can eliminate this unsightly problem? Is this just an inevitable aspect of aging? And should I consider surgery?
Rebecca, Santa Barbara
Hey Rebecca, How are you?
The problem of which you speak is very common and usually affects women. But truthfully, you can’t spot reduce body fat. There have been many theories in the past, some saying that if you exercise a specific area a lot, with high reps and low weight, that you’ll be able to burn fat from that specific region on the body. The theory was based on the fact that by exercising in such a way you would be increasing blood flow to that area, and the ability to burn fat would be enhanced. But in my opinion that just isn’t true.
Of course there are also creams, laser treatments and some other non-medical options that also promise firmer skin, but again I’d have to say to stay away. Even if results are noticeable, they’re usually temporary. But Rebecca I’ve had this conversation with many people – women, men, and even myself. You’ll always have something about your body that you’d like to change; something you wished could look a little different. I know I do, but I don’t let it define who I am or be all that I see when I look in the mirror.
I’m not sure if it’s our culture, but for some reason we’re wired to see our own and each other’s flaws first, before seeing anything else. If it’s just your arms backsides that you don’t like, then that means you like the other 98.5% of yourself. That’s a pretty darn good percentage so why not focus on what you do like and not the other way around.
Having said that, I understand sometimes that in order for a person to feel better on the inside, they need to have something fixed on the outside. So in that case, yes there is surgery available for the area that you speak of. But I’d research it heavily first and make an informed decision. It’s up to you of course, but I’m sure you are beautiful just the way you are.
